Nerdseye View Travel Blogger Forum Proves: Travel Bloggers can and do communicate!
Aug 12th, 2008 by Happy Hotelier
I hinted already in my High Five (4) post to the extensive list of Woman Travel Bloggers from DeliciousBaby, but then I didn’t fully realize what was going on.
This is what happened:
There was a meet up of the BlogHer community of female bloggers in SFO. Several female travel bloggers had a separate meet up with some coffee and tossed around the idea of forming a community. Something I have been advocating for quite some time with not much success apart form the Twitter/T-List adventure with Elliot NG of Uptake (read my Twitter Category) followed by Chris’ Travel Twit.
I believe I had read somewhere some of the ladies had an after party at Guy Kawasaki’s home. I cannot find a lot published about that party, but that must have been quite a party!
Shortly thereafter Pam of the NerdseyeView blog and travel writer at BlogHer plugged a simple but good old fashioned php forum Nerd’s Eye View Travelblogger Forum | A New Travel Community into her blog and look what happens in just three weeks:
- 61 users
- 43 topics ranging from:
- Welcome to the Forum, via
- Newbies,
- Travel photography,
- Blogging Questions with 20 subtopics,
- Travel writing Gigs and
- Foody Friends to
- Expat Blogs
- They do accept male bloggers: I’m in:-)
- You can explore it even without being (or before becoming) a member!
Kudos to the ladies who set this off where the man dropped the ball!
Go join the posse!

What can I say, female travel bloggers get the job done. A hat tip to Pam at Nerd’s Eye View who put together the travel blogger forum without even setting foot in San Francisco for the BlogHer conference. Amazing how the internet keeps us connected.
The BlogHer Travel Meet Up was a great thing. We’re hoping to make an appearance on the 2009 agenda next year with an actual Travel Blogger Panel.
A little background, the Thursday night party at Guy’s house was co-sponsored by Alltop.com and Kirtsy. I wrote about crashing the party on my WhataTrip blog. You can read the post at Winemaker Meets Fellow BlogHers at Sf Conference.
Thanks for your solid efforts at keeping the travel blogging community connected. Combined with Facebook and Twitter, I feel we are really coming together.

First, I want to thank you for the props. I really appreciate it! And I’m glad you’re participating in the forum.
Disclaimer: I write for the BlogHer site, but the opinions I express here are my own. I don’t speak for the organization.
Now, a little bit of clarification.
Though I write about travel for the BlogHer site, I wasn’t at the BlogHer conference. There WAS a travel meet-up at the conference and afterwards, my mailbox filled up with feedback about the desire for some kind of travelblogging community from those that DID attend.
I don’t know anything about the party at Guy Kawasaki’s place. That event is totally independent from the creation of the forum. I’ve never laid eyes on guy outside of Twitter and AllTop. :)
Also, while I do cover travel for BlogHer and try to focus their on blogs written about travel by women, there’s no gender preference on the forum. The forum isn’t sponsored by or related to BlogHer, it’s just a byproduct of a conversation that happened AT BlogHer. Make sense?
The forum is all mine, or rather, YOURS, if you choose to participate, no matter what your chromosomes and/or politics. If you’re blogging about travel and have things you want to talk about, you are welcome. So far, there are only two things I ask: stay on topic (travelblogging or travel) and don’t spam. That’s it.
If you’ve got questions, feel free to get in touch or, hey, post them to the forum!
Please join us. And thanks again, HH, for the post!

Thank you for pointing me in some direction about the Guy afterparty. I thought I cathed it somewhere down the line on Twitter, but I was under the rocks as well at that time (doing a bit of traveling myself). From this side of the pond I just imagined all the ladies tiptoeing to the great and charming Hawaian’s house…a bit of gossip:-)
@ Pam
Thank you for your quick comment. Appreciate your effort and the fact that although you don’t like to blog for free, you simply did set it up without talking about “billable hours” :-) and I’m sure the forum will meet a lot of response.
Thanks for all your post.
It’s been great interacting with everyone in the Nerds Eye View forum, and I’ve gotten a lot of great advice there already.
Now that we’re all talking, I hope well come up with even more ways to build a tighter knit travelblogging community.
One thing that I am doing is hosting a weekly “Photo Friday.” Where anyone can post a photo on their blog, and then quickly and easily add it to the Photo Friday post on my site. Posting a weekly photo is a fun way to share a short story about a past trip with my readers. I’m also loving seeing everyone else’s photos, and it seems like a easy way for us to become familiar with eachother’s work (and drive a little more traffic in the process). Thanks so much for the heads up about this forum. I’ve just registered. Hopefully, it will start me on a path toward becoming a PAID travel writer.

Thank you for coming by and certainly I will have a look between my photos for submission to your Photo Friday post.
@ Barbara
Glad to see you back. For some time I was afraid you didn’t like me calling you my fellow gr** Blogger Friend. Another blogging lady friend took the same comment a bit serious where no pun was intended. Read my lips no gr** word anymore:-)
The forum is great!
